She Floats!
(and don't leak!)
24-26 September 2004)
Had a Scout campout,
so "Buckey" went along for her maiden voyage.
Tied her down on top of
my Land Rover and off we went.

Got to camp and the
next afternoon, got her bottom wet.
I went first solo, to make sure she floated,
didn't leak and was safe:
Then the Scouts got rides in "Mr. Art's" Boat:
Observations
"Buckey" was a fun project! This was the first time I've built a boat, and had no problems. I went beyond the kit and added inwhales and decks. mainly for the looks. I will admit it has been long time since I've paddled a canoe or even a pirogue, but found it hard to keep a straight course when padding solo, even using a "J" stroke. Was ok when I had a bow paddler, but wandered all over the lake when I was alone. Might be better if I used a double kayak paddle or added a keel. I also noticed the floor buckling a bit when getting in; a keel should stiffen that up also. Now to build a twin for my fleet! Maybe a square stern, or a 12 footer..... |
