The Classic Cajun Pirogue
Dear Uncle John

Although I came across some pirogue plans here and there around the net, I found yours the most practical, most detailed, and definitely the clearest! (click here for more photos and extensive comments by the builder.)

What a great project.  The beauty of it is you can make it as hard or easy as you want.  The little square wooden blocks are for tie downs and to hold camo.  The are also used to hold the back rest. She is a small pirogue, about 11.5 ft.  She was built for a layout duck blind and light fishing.   She works great for a layout blind and taking naps when the action is slow.  The big boy will be built in the spring with  4 ribs and between 15 and 16 ft.

I completed my boat a while ago, and from the beginning I intended to send you a good pic when I got one.  This one doesn't show the boat in detail, but it does wrap up all the reasons I built it into one nice pic.  This pic is of the boat, and my best bud during a slow day of duck hunting at Ragged Island, a large marsh off the mighty James River in coastal Virginia.  My boat ended up being 15'8", and it glides through the marsh like a breeze.  Thanks again for your help, I think I'll be building your Jon boat design this winter.

It was a great experience. Thanks for the kit and the excellent instructions. She went together just as planned.  Took her out today for the first trip.

Thanks again,

My uncle and I have just completed one of your pirogue kits. We decided to include a brace and decks, and used 2" by 1" poplar for the rails. These all add so much extra support we would strongly recommend spending a little longer on them. We realized afterwards that taking care on the initial fiber-glassing will save you a lot of time later on, as sanding down even the smallest lumps of resin takes a lot of energy.  We bought 8' long strips of ply and still managed to make our boat 15.5' long, which can carry two people and a dog comfortably. We worked for 6 consecutive days and it took us under 20 hours, it made for a very fun project!! Here are some pictures during and after construction, we would love it if you could include this paragraph and these pictures on your site!

Thanks for the kit!
